Three Sha of the month

In addition to the days of the Year Sha (Three Killings), there are also the Three Killings of the Month (月三煞 Yue San-sha). These are the days that are the Triple Sha for the Earthly branch of a given month. The monthly Three Killings are determined in the same way as the annual ones, however, for the monthly Sha, the reference point is the Earthly branch (also known as the animal sign) of the month, not the year. But if the Earthly branches of the year (the so-called “animals of the Chinese zodiac”) are known to many, less is known about the animals of the month. However, identifying the animal of the month in general is not difficult, since they indicate the 12 months of the year, just as it is done in the Gregorian calendar, which we are used to using.

However, the Chinese months only partially coincide with the Gregorian months, and their beginning and end never fall on the 1st or 30/31st. So, for example, if we are interested in a March date, most likely, but not necessarily, it will fall in the month of the Rabbit (卯 Mao). If you are interested in a date in September, only in 80% of cases will it fall in the month of the Rooster (酉 Yu). Similar to the Three Year Sha, the Three Sha of the Month is also subdivided into the days of the Monthly Robbery Sha (Yue Jie-sha 月劫煞), Calamity Sha (Yue Zai-sha 月災煞) and the Sha of the month (Yue-sha 月煞).

To determine each kind of the Sha of the month, we must proceed as follows: having defined which Earthly branch (animal) corresponds to the month we are interested in, we need to determine which of the four combinations of Earthly branches (combinations of Fire, Water, Metal or Wood) it belongs to.

Snake 巳 – Rooster 酉 – Ox 丑 = Metal Combination

Tiger 寅 – Horse 午 – Dog 戌 = Fire Combination

Pig 亥 – Rabbit 卯 – Goat 未 = Wood Combination

Then, you should determine the element that conflicts with this union. The animals that make up the season of this element will be the animals of Sha of the month. For example, in the month of the Rabbit, the three months are Monkey, Rooster and Dog. Because the Rabbit belongs to the combination of Wood, which is opposed by animals belonging to the autumn group of Metal (Monkey, Rooster, Dog). Since the day of the Three Killings of the month is a day that is in a negative relationship with the month, the result of doing or starting important things on the day of the Three Killings of the month usually lasts only until the end of the month.

Therefore, in general, if it is impossible to avoid such a day, it can be used to start something long-term, engage in long-term projects or activities, develop long-term relationships.

For example, it is believed that it is fine to schedule a wedding ceremony, on the days of the third month, since marriages are usually concluded for a long time. Of course, this is only acceptable if you can’t find a suitable ideal date and “can’t bear to get married.” However, if possible, it is better not to have a wedding on such a day.

However, avoid starting anything short-term during these days (celebrations, trips, vacations, etc). The days of the Three Sha of the Months should also not be used to start studying, prepare for exams or take exams.
