Establish Day

Establish  Day (建 Jian) marks the beginning of a cycle when Qi is quite strong. It is a favorable day for the foundation of something, renewing of wishes, prospecting for the future. Countless endeavors are initiated on this day! The name of the system of 12 indicators: Jian-chu (建除) or in full: Jian-chu erzhi shen (建除十二神) originates from the name of this day!

How is the Establish Day calculated in the Chinese calendar?  This day corresponds to the Earthly Branch (animal from the cycle of 12 animals of the Chinese calendar) that coincides with the Earthly Branch of the month. For example, in the Rabbit month 卯, all Establish days will be Rabbit days 卯. However, you don't necessarily have to calculate these days yourself, as it will be difficult to determine the Rabbit day or another animal day without the Chinese calendar. But you can use our Feng Shui Fortune Calendar, which provides not only indicators for each day but also a lot of other useful information.

According to tradition, in old China, on the Establish Day, the emperor offered prayers for a bountiful harvest. In the modern world, Establish Day is  good for engagement, proposing marriage, and discussing weddings, but not for the wedding itself, starting a new job, assuming a new position, or for commercial deals and transactions.

The Establish Day is also very suitable for "visiting friends."

The phrase "visiting friends" in the Chinese almanac Tung-shu actually means a meeting for negotiations. Therefore, for ages, on the day when one could "visit friends," the Chinese have been arranging marriages: finding a spouse, a father, or a mother for their child – a very important matter. Today, the phrase "visiting friends'' carries a slightly different meaning, implying actions such as business negotiations, discussions, building connections with business partners, and signing contracts. Therefore, the day is particularly suitable for job interviews and changing jobs.

The Establish Day is also good for seeking medical assistance, starting a diet, planning a trip or embarking on a long journey or moving to a new house. It is also suitable for enrolling in an educational institution and starting studies at school or in courses.

This is a good day to start construction and renovation works, but not for laying the foundation or any earthworks, nor for demolishing old buildings. These actions are not considered actual construction or the erection of something new. The Establish Day is also not suitable for digging graves or for funerals. This may seem strange, but in China, attitudes toward funeral dates differ significantly from European and Russian traditions. Chinese people believe that if they bury their ancestor on an auspicious day in a good location, luck will favor many generations of descendants.

Since the Earthly Branch of the day is the same as that of the month, the qi is too strong on the Establish Day, so it is best not to organize celebrations on this day.

Following the Establish Day, which marks the beginning of a new path, comes the Remove Day, which is suitable for purging the old and obsolete!

Below is the designation of the 12 Day Indicators in the Tung Shu, the traditional Chinese almanac.

“Cutting clothes, submitting petitions, exchanging and trading, traveling, establishing posts — all these undertakings will be extremely successful. Digging the ground, traveling in a boat, opening reserves and savings is unlucky. The day marks the beginning of the twelve-day cycle. It is favorable to open new enterprises, show business activity in any field, buy or sell, and travel short distances. Long journeys by air or sea, any activity outside the home, including construction, gardening, anything associated with heavy physical labor is unlucky. Beware of raiding supplies or spending your rainy day savings.”
